Whole-leaf orthodox tea from Ilam, bought lot by lot and graded before it ships. We are not a plantation and do not claim to be one — we buy from growers in the eastern hills, and the record of who grew what stays attached to the goods from sample to arrival.

Flush matters more than type. A first-flush white and a second-flush black off the same hillside are different harvests with different cups and different prices, not variations on a theme. Each tea below states its own flush, altitude and grade where we have recorded them.

Grades

What the grade actually tells you.

Orthodox grading is opaque unless you live in tea. Here is what the terms on our specification sheets mean, so you can read them without taking our word for anything.

Whole leaf
Leaves left intact through rolling and drying. Slower to brew, and the grade most specialty buyers want.
Broken
Leaf broken during rolling. Faster extraction, stronger cup, usually a lower price per kilo.
Fannings and dust
The smallest particles. Bagged tea and blending stock rather than specialty.
Tippy grades
Proportion of unopened bud in the lot. More tips generally means a more delicate cup and a higher price.

Cup it before you commit to a container.

Tell us the market and the volume and we will send lots to taste, with the specification sheets that go with them.
